We are a collective of health care workers, advocates, lawyers, and frontline care providers who are concerned about the care of patients who are detained. We wanted to develop an educational tool for frontline workers to engage with abolitionist practices in healthcare and minimize harms when patients present to healthcare settings detained or accompanied by law enforcement. Our current medical educational institutions do not sufficiently prepare or train frontline care providers to engage with the carceral state. The learning presented here represents the labour of the authors to develop critical patient-centred practices, the wisdom and insights shared from mentors, and the lived experience of those interacting with healthcare while in custody or detention.
We are fundraising to publish this tool as an accessible zine both on online and in physical settings with an aim of disseminating it to frontline healthcare providers across Canada.
Cost Breakdown Consists of the following:
1) Honorarium to those with lived or living experience of seeking health services while in custody or detention to review the content and ensure its validity: approximately $1000
2) Printing Copies of the Zines In Colour: approximately $500
3) Dissemination (To clinics, educational or healthcare settings via online platforms, mailing, events): $1,500
Total GoFundMe Goal: $3,000
