HELP us keep our homes!

The Long Branch community in SW Toronto Ontario Canada is an idyllic one. Our community is bordered by Lake Ontario and 50% of us are renters vs 50% homeowners and we all get along really well.

Our five mid-rise buildings of seven stories, home to many seniors who have lived here for decades, are being threatened with demolition. And being replaced by two 30-story condos as well as multiple 12-story towers which would QUADRUPLE the density of residents in this small area.
What our complex looks like now vs what is proposed

There are 548 residential units in these five buildings and the majority of renters have lived here for 10+ years, many for 25+ years or even 35 or 50+.

We have roots, friends, family, schools, doctors, and social lives are all based here and we love it. Most of us are in rent-controlled apartments that are quite affordable. And we expected to live out our lives in this place, not having to fear major rent increases in our lifetime.

That is all being threatened now with a 5-10 year construction zone that would uproot the tenants of two buildings (a few hundred people) who would have to move away until the new rental buildings were finished - estimated 3-4 years with major disruptions in their lives.

The rest of us, again hundreds of people, would have to put with living in a construction zone for those years until we also get moved away from our beloved lakefront to hundreds of feet away, probably obscured views by those 30-story skyscrapers. Note that there are no buildings over 10 stories in our neighbourhood, so 30 stories is 3x too high.

We are not on a major roadway or even that convenient for public transit. This kind of increased density would destroy many people's long-time homes, darken the surrounding houses and completely change the character of this small community. Our streets are narrow and not made for major traffic that would happen if density was increased 4x never mind what the truck traffic would be like for years during construction.

We are fighting greedy developers with big pockets, and a developer-friendly political environment. We desperately need help to pay for legal counsel to fight them more equally.

Please donate what you can so we can get the best legal that we can afford so that this lovely community is not destroyed.
