Centro de Escalada Urbana is grassroots community project founded in 2010 that uses rock climbing as a tool for personal empowerment with youth from the favelas of Rio de Janeiro. Our program aims to not only promote access to the sport of climbing and all of its benefits, but also offer long-term mentorship in the areas of health and education that can help our at-risk students better prepare themselves to face the diverse set of challenges they face while growing up in some of Rio’s most socially and economically excluded neighborhoods.
Our diverse group of volunteers includes professional climbing instructors, personal trainers, educators, nutritionists, physical therapists and psychologists. We offer free indoor and outdoor climbing courses, educational mentorship, vocational training, nutritional advice and access to physical and mental health specialists. We work closely with our students over the course of years, identifying the particular needs of each young person and building a personalized support network to help address their needs.
Dozens of young people from the favela of Rocinha have already passed through our program, many of which after years of our support, were able to finish their schooling and find employment. In 2021 we are now opening a new class that will expand our reach and work with youth from favelas from all over the city. We have partnered with a local climbing gym to offer the best infrastructure possible and are connecting with other community programs around Rio to offer our specialized programming to help complement their work.
As Rio suffers through an economic depression, as well as a health and educational crisis, projects like ours have become a central pillar of support for many families in need. We ask for your help, to keep our work alive and growing, using the power of climbing to create a network of resources that can fundamentally change the lives of some of Rio’s most vulnerable youth.
Your donation will help cover the 2021 operational costs for both the new students of our standard program and our recently implemented high performance training program for competition climbing. These funds all go directly to help maintain 8 to 12 youth participants over the course of this year and include: transportation stipends, meals and snacks, scholarship grants, competition costs, and outdoor excursions.
