Here's Their Story: Joey's mom, Irma Rojas, was my mom, Thea Porembski's, best friend when I was growing up at Sheridan Hills Baptist Church. Her son, Joey, was my classmate from 5th to 8th grade.
Joey has struggled most of his adult life with learning & emotional differences, which has affected his work & family life.
He has two children with his former wife. His daughter. Rebecca is 20 years of age, and his son, Joseph, is 15 years of age.
Joey has lived with his mother, Irma, for 18 years since his wife divorced him. Irma has been a big help to him. Four months ago, Irma was moved into a nursing home with serious health and early dementia issues.
I've now been helping Joey navigate life without his mom at home.
Here's what I found out.
- Joey WALKS to work 2.5 HOURS each way! He is a nighttime security guard in South Carolina.
Joey needs a working car so he can
- Visit his mom, Irma, in the nursing home
- visit his 15-year-old son
- Attend continuing education classes so he may get a better job.
- Visit food pantries
Irma and Joey were the first young widowed mom and son I'd ever met. At that time, in the 1970's, there weren't special grief support groups for widows and their children. Because our mothers were best friends, I could see up close that life wasn't easy for Joey and Irma.
When I became a widowed mom with two young daughters, I remembered what was missing in Joey and Irma's grief journey. Irma and Joey Rojas along with my experience as a widowed mom became my inspiration for starting a ministry, Widow Strong, to meet the very unique needs of widows and their children.
Will you please prayerfully consider helping Joey Rojas get a car?
Thank you for your generosity and kind consideration! God bless!
"Pure religion and undefiled before God and the Father is this, To visit the fatherless and widows in their affliction..." James 1:27
