The Please Remember Me Project, founded by Navy veteran Tom Regan & cofounded by Gene Loparco, is an ambitious and highly visible initiative in the Albany/Capital Region of New York. This GoFundMe was created to honor Tom's selfless aspiration and goals related to this project as he battles metastatic cancer.
Their core mission is to create physical, enduring, and impactful tributes to the fallen veterans from the area, ensuring their sacrifice is not forgotten.
Since 2013, the project installs a stunning display of roughly 180 American flags along a 4-mile stretch of Route 9 in Latham and Loudonville (the area historically known as the military highway).
Each flag is adorned with a double black mourning ribbon and collectively represents the over 1,200 to 1,900 service personnel from the Capital Region (including Albany, Rensselaer, Saratoga, and Schenectady counties) who have perished in conflict since WWII. Every year a brand new flag is purchased and hung up out of respect for the fallen.
The display goes up each Memorial Day and stays up until around Labor Day/September, creating a powerful, moving experience for thousands of drivers daily.
Volunteers: They organize community involvement, including lining up volunteers to march with flags in the Albany Veterans Day Parade.
Partnerships: The project operates with strong community support, including National Grid linemen who volunteer their time and equipment to safely install the flags on utility poles, corporate sponsors like Trustco Bank helping to cover the costs and more!
Excess funds go to support veterans!
