For the past few months, I’ve been working closely with a children’s safe house here in Kilifi, Kenya — a place that shelters 104 children who have faced unimaginable challenges.
Despite the adversity they’ve endured, these kids are strong, bright, and full of joy and laughter. Many come from broken homes, are orphans, or have survived physical or sexual abuse.
Some of the girls, just teenagers, have been forced to make heartbreaking choices simply to afford basic necessities like sanitary towels.
There is no clean water connection. The soil is damaged from years of illegal coral mining, leaving them without the means to grow their own food. There isn’t even a fence to keep them safe.
The lack of security and funding for warm meals means the safe house is often unable to welcome or care for the children consistently. Weekly activities have been cancelled time and again because of this.
But we are not starting from scratch. There is already a beautiful structure in place (yellow building in pictures)— one that can become a training and skill-building centre, and a truly safe, nurturing space for these children.
This place has so much potential to transform lives — not just of these 104 children, but of the broader community too.
With your support, we can:
- Connect the safe house to clean, reliable water by installing a mains meter and setting up rainwater harvesting from the roof.
- Build secure raised garden beds using up-cycled materials collected from our beach cleanups — giving the children a place to learn how to grow their own food and protect plants from goats and other animals.
- Fence off the area so they can garden, play, and learn safely.
- Provide art supplies to facilitate our teaching and bring light, joy, and creativity into their lives.
- Supply monthly sanitary towels for the 40 young girls living there — a simple necessity that can mean the difference between safety and danger.
This project isn’t just about infrastructure.
It’s about restoring dignity, giving hope, and building self-reliance for these children’s futures.
We are aiming to raise 5,000 GBP,
Every single donation, no matter the size, will directly help build a safer, healthier, and happier place for these wonderful children.
I would be so grateful for any support. Even small donations or the simple act of sharing this cause will mean the world.
Thank you for taking time to read this.
