Please Help My Sister’s Family Rebuild After Losing Their Home to Fire

I never imagined I'd be writing something like this about my sister and her family.

On 1st September at around 3:30pm, on the day of my niece's 9th birthday, their lives changed in a matter of minutes.

The summer holidays were coming to an end, and they were just getting back into their normal routine. The children were getting their school bags ready for the next day, getting their uniforms and everything else prepared for going back to school, while still enjoying the last little bit of summer together. It was meant to be an ordinary Tuesday afternoon, getting ready for the school routine to start again. None of them could have imagined what was about to happen.

Just two days earlier, my nephew had celebrated his 11th birthday. They were in the middle of what should have been a lovely week as a family of six — my sister, her husband and their four children, aged 11, 9, 5 and 1.

Instead, their home caught fire.

Their tumble dryer set alight. The electrical trip did go off, but sadly not before the fire had already started.

My sister was home alone with all four children while her husband was at work. Thankfully, she noticed white smoke coming from the utility area before it became black smoke. What happened next was terrifyingly quick. Within just a few minutes, the smoke had turned into thick, black, billowing smoke throughout the house.

Their 11-year-old son called 999 and helped his mum enormously in the panic, getting the baby out of bed while they all got out of the house.

Thankfully, nobody was physically hurt.

But they have lost their home.

The kitchen and utility room have been completely destroyed. Every other room has suffered extensive soot and smoke damage from the electrical fire. The smoke has reached inside drawers and wardrobes, covering even the things they had tucked away, and everything smells strongly of chemical smoke.

The house is now completely uninhabitable and they expect they may be unable to return for at least 6–12 months.

Right now, they are split between three different family homes. A few essentials, along with the small amount of clothing they've managed to salvage, are spread between different houses while family members do everything they can to help.

They're hoping to find a specialist laundry service that can safely remove the smoke and potentially harmful chemicals from their clothes, so that they can save whatever they possibly can.

The children have lost their birthday presents, toys and teddies. Their new school uniforms, school shoes and school bags were all lost too. They don't yet know the full extent of the damage to their loft, where 11 years' worth of family keepsakes and memories are stored, but they're holding onto hope that some of those things may have survived.

They are fortunate to have home insurance, and the claim has already been started. But as anyone who has ever dealt with a major insurance claim will know, these things don't happen overnight.

In the meantime, they need the basics.

Last night alone, replacing essentials such as underwear, pyjamas, toiletries and a travel cot cost over £300.

And that is just the beginning.

My brother-in-law is self-employed and is the main income for their family. He works incredibly hard, 6 days a week and often around 12 hours a day, to provide for his family.

My sister also runs a small business from home around the children, which normally provides a little extra income for the family. With their home now damaged and uninhabitable, she obviously isn't able to continue working.

They have insurance, but there is a huge gap between losing almost everything overnight and being able to access the support they are entitled to.

That's why I'm setting this up for them.

I know they will feel uncomfortable with me doing this. They are not people who would normally ask for help, and they have always worked hard for what they have. But right now, I want to give them one less thing to worry about.

Any money raised will help them through the immediate aftermath of the fire — replacing essential clothing, school uniforms, shoes, toiletries, children's necessities and all of the everyday things a family of six suddenly needs when their entire home is no longer usable.

If you are able to donate, no matter how small, it will genuinely help them while they try to get through the coming weeks and months.

If you can't donate, sharing this fundraiser would mean just as much.

They have lost their home and almost everything they've spent the last 11 years building as a family.

But they got out.

All six of them are safe.

And that is the one thing we are incredibly grateful for.

Now, while they wait for the insurance process to begin and face what could be at least six months away from home, I just want to help my sister and her family get through the next few weeks without having to worry about how they are going to replace the basic things their children need.
