“Don’t worry, I’ve got her!” ... a mother’s promise during her daughter’s battle with cancer.
It’s been a rough year for all of us.
We’ve had to manage through the effects of a global pandemic and a polarizing political landscape. We’ve had to put our lives on pause, make sacrifices, and reflect on what’s really important. We’ve had to adapt quickly, dig deep inside ourselves, and work so much harder.
Now imagine if, amidst all the year’s challenges and fears, your child is also experiencing enlarged lymph nodes that would suddenly appear and subside and emergency room visits and test after test were providing no clear diagnosis. Then, all non-urgent medical appointments were just cancelled, delaying progress on finding the source of the issue.
Finally, in August of 2020, when there was a lump that grew and grew and was causing agonizing pain, you were allowed to schedule a surgical biopsy. Imagine if, throughout it all, you were being told “they could rule out anything bad because cancer does not move around and disappear” and that they were "just going to pop it out, send it to pathology and it's probably going to be benign."
Imagine if, several days after surgery you called the doctor’s office to make a follow up appointment and you are asked to hold for the doctor and he says the words, "We got the biopsy back and it's Hodgkin’s Lymphoma." Imagine being confused and frozen with fear because you believed cancer doesn't move around and disappear right?
That is a glimpse into what 2020 was like for Jeanne Burian, Nicky Bertucci, and their 19-year-old daughter Emily.
Since then, there have been tests and more tests, more fears and tears, fertility treatments and egg harvesting, and, with a compromised immune system right before scheduling her first chemotherapy treatment, a bout with COVID-19.
As anyone who knows her would expect, Emily has faced down every challenge and is currently kicking Hodgkin’s Lymphoma’s ass!
With several treatments to go, this is where Emily, Jeanne, and Nicky could use our help. Even with insurance, the bills are mounting.
Please help me to raise funds for the family as they focus on beating the &#%$ing crap out of cancer!
