G'day, we're Jays n Dees.
We're a Queensland family of eight - the two parents (the Dees) and our six children (the Jays), including not one, but two sets of twins.
We live on a small acreage just north of Gympie, and over the past 12 months or so, it has felt like every time we've managed to deal with one major expense, another one has been waiting around the corner.
We're not trying to fund a lavish lifestyle or buy the latest and greatest.
We just want to get our family comfortably functional again.
It started with D1's work truck.
As a self-employed handyman, the truck is an important part of earning an income, but it needed some fairly expensive repairs to get it back on the road.
Then our water tank finally decided that more than 25 years of loyal service was enough.
Living on acreage, that tank supplies the water we use for drinking, showers, laundry, dishes and everyday family life. Going without it wasn't really an option, so replacing it became a priority expense.
Then came our main family vehicle.
After putting a decent chunk of money that we couldn't really afford into repairs, it seemed to understand that its behaviour was unacceptable and became reliable again.
For a while.
About a week before our newest set of twins was due to arrive, the transmission failed.
With six children - including newborn twins - having a reliable family vehicle isn't much of a luxury.
After finally having the vehicle assessed, we decided that borrowing money from a family member for another vehicle would be cheaper and more practical in the long term than continuing to pour money into the old one.
And that brings us here.
What we're trying to achieve
We've set this fundraiser at $32,000.
We're hoping to use the money raised to help us:
- reduce the credit card debt that has accumulated while dealing with these expenses;
- repay the family member who helped us obtain a reliable family vehicle;
- continue necessary building and renovation work around our home to make it safer and more suitable for our children; and
- cover the cost of a vasectomy for D1 because, after six beautiful children and two sets of twins, we think our family has quite successfully completed its recruitment program.
We're not expecting strangers on the internet to simply solve everything for us.
We're continuing to work on it ourselves.
D1 works as a self-employed handyman, and together we're also trying to grow our family business, Jays n Dees, in the hope of building another sustainable source of income for our family.
If you're in a position to donate, even a small contribution would genuinely help us move a little closer to getting back on top of things.
