"When we moved to this area [in 2005 after Hurricane Stan] most of the trees in this forest had been cut by other communities living here. Those of us families from Chuicutama living here at the time decided to buy 300 acres of this mountain and re-plant trees so that our children would have a forest to sustain them... with the interest we are saving and growing from the micro-credit loan program that Yabal, we hope to one day be able to buy another 300 acres of a nearby mountain to grow the forest." -Miguel Guarchaj, Chuicutama community leader
This is Yabal's second year participating in reforestation efforts with our artisan community, Chuicutama. We are supporting their environmental efforts to re-populate deforested mountains with new tree seedlings. This area of Guatemala is severely deforested which not only hurts the environment but also affects the communities living there. The lack of trees causes drought and the drying of natural reservoirs, which is already a problem for these communities. Forests when managed communally and sustainably also provide an important renewable resource for firewood and building materials, as well as important edible and medicinal plants. More sustainably managed forests mean less strain on the few ones remaining standing in the area. We have reforested over 6500 trees to date! And hope to plant many more in the coming years!
Please plant a tree (or many trees) with us! Each tree costs only .50 cents! So that means...
$5 plants 10 trees
$10 plants 20 trees
$50 plants 100 trees
$100 plants 200 trees
$250 plants 500 trees
and... $500 plants 1000 trees!
We hope to raise at least $500-1000 in order to reforest the rest of the mountain in May 2019. Thank you for your support!
