My name is Max Wo. I am a Life Scout from Troop 243, Lafayette who is passionate about environmental conservation and restoration. Throughout my scouting journey, I learned valuable life and outdoor skills, practiced leadership, and served my community. I am excited to give back to the community through my service project.
My Eagle Scout Service Project aims to restore and enhance biodiversity by planting native Valley Oak trees. Dead Monterey pines have been removed by the road up to the Lafayette Reservoir. Originally planted by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1940s, these pines have been infected by the invasive pine bark beetle. Climate change has increased the survivorship of the pine bark beetles, as conditions are more suitable for them. As a result, the beetles have been destroying many pines across California, including the ones at the Lafayette Reservoir.
To maintain a thriving ecosystem, new trees should be planted. Valley oak trees are the best choice because of their adaptations to the environment. It is drought tolerant as its deep root system can access groundwater. Not only that, valley oaks have an aesthetic enhancement to the reservoir.
The funds will be used to purchase 5 25-gallon trees that retail at $485 each and other planting supplies. The unused funds will be turned over to Lafayette Reservoir.
I hope you consider supporting my project. Any amount of contribution will help me complete my project successfully.
