Pineapple 10k event
Where it all began; from national fruit to national treasures in Antigua.
One sunny day, during lock down and outside of the curfew, I saw Alex Grimley of Rocks Group (Sheer Rocks and Catherine’s Sur La Plage) here in Antigua taking
exercise. He was running with some enthusiasm. Alex had also just put out a
GoFundMe page to raise funds to feed his team.
This got me thinking. What if I challenged him, and other business leaders, to do a sponsored run dressed as a giant pineapple; and have the funds raised go towards care packages for their furloughed teams? So, I challenged Alex publicly on
Facebook and, to my astonishment, he said yes. I do believe he had been imbibing in his own rum cocktail at the time but, hey, I’ll take that.
Why a pineapple? Well, for one, it’s the National Fruit of Antigua & Barbuda, and
secondly, it’s full of nutrients and we have to stay healthy these days to build our
immune system; even the Government is encouraging us to stay fit and be our
brother’s keeper.
Secretly, I also thought the idea of uber-cool Alex running dressed in a pineapple
suit (yes, it will be 90 degrees ) would be hilarious (and people would pay big bucks to see him and many other leaders).
Having put the call out for a pineapple suit on Facebook, I had a great response.
Not all helpful ;). Just when I was giving up hope, a volunteer came forward. Enter Rach Rose. I didn’t know at this time that Rach had history in making theatre
costumes at college - how lucky are we on 108 sq. miles to find such talent?
Just one discussion with Alex has resulted in the #AntiguaPineapple10k, one
amazing pineapple suit, a PR drive with the best on the island and a commitment
from Alex to be the first “challenged” business owner to run for his team. Who will be next? Please feel free to nominate
