Physiotherapy in Madagascar
My name is Claire McIvor and I am a Physiotherapist working at the Leeds Teaching Hospitals Trust. From next March 2019 for 3 months I am planning to volunteer my physiotherapy skills to assist in the development of Physiotherapy as a Profession in Madagascar. I am attempting to raise £2,000 to fund and support this work and would be extremely grateful for any donation you are able to make towards supporting my work!
Background: Why Madagascar?
- Madagascar is the tenth poorest country in the world (£415 GDP per capita)
- For a population of 25 million there are only approximately 200 Physiotherapists in the whole country
- Limited healthcare structure, with poor access to existing healthcare
- High volume healthcare service
- Underdeveloped use of the Physiotherapy profession
Context of my work
- The purpose of my work will be to work alongside local physiotherapists, and assist in the development of Physiotherapy as a profession in Madagascar.
- I will be supporting the development of a dynamic care team whose aim will be to deliver patient-centred care, similar to the service we successfully offer in the NHS
- Specifically I will be working within the Multidisciplinary Team to improve communication and collaboration between different healthcare professions, enabling a high level of patient-centred care to be delivered
- I will also be providing 1:1 training to local Malagasy therapists, and will make use of the 'Train the Trainer' model to allow these skills to be passed on and shared for years to come
Funding my work
The money I raise through fundraising will go towards providing equipment to Malagasy health professionals and supporting the development of the Physiotherapy service. Funding will also cover translator costs allowing me to integrate, work within and provide teachings and seminars to the local team.
All of my work will be voluntary, therefore I would be incredibly grateful for any donation, no matter how large or small you are able to contribute!
Thank you,
Claire
