Those who have will never truly understand what it means to have not.

When I married into this family, I learned that love often means helping those with less — something my wife, Ann, has always done with quiet strength and deep compassion. But nothing could have prepared us for the devastation that struck her family’s home in Medellin, a small town in Cebu, Philippines.

A powerful earthquake destroyed the house Ann grew up in — the home she lovingly rebuilt over the years with her own hands and hard-earned money after becoming a proud U.S. citizen. Like so many immigrants, she has always worked tirelessly, sending money back home to help her family survive because they have so little.

It’s hard to imagine what it feels like to lose everything — your home, your memories, your sense of safety — until it’s gone in an instant. To make things even more heartbreaking, we don’t yet know if it’s even safe or possible to rebuild on their land. The ground has shifted, and engineers will need to assess whether it can ever be a home site again.

We’ve never been the type to ask for help, but this tragedy is far beyond what we can manage alone. Our hope is to help Ann’s family find stability — whether that means rebuilding on their land or finding a new place they can finally call home again.
