From Selfless Service to Sudden Stillness — Let’s Help Phil & Shar Get Back on the Road

If you’ve ever picked up a paintbrush, hammer, shovel, or trash bag alongside A Year To Volunteer, then you already know: Phil and Shar Roos don’t just talk about giving — they live it.

In the last 5½ years, they’ve:

• Led 44 service projects

• Covered 30 states

• Inspired thousands of volunteers

• And poured over 56,000 hours into making communities better, stronger, and more beautiful.

All of it done from the road. All of it made possible by one rig — their home, their base, their heartbeat.

Now, that engine is silent. And they’re stuck.

En route to their next project in New York, disaster struck: coolant leaking into the engine oil. The diagnosis is devastating — possible blown head gasket, failed liners, or even a cracked block. The fix? At best, 50 to 90 labor hours and at least $30,000-50,000. Even then, no guarantees.

This isn’t just a mechanical problem. It’s a mission-stopper. A purpose-derailer. A blow to two of the most generous people we know.

They would never ask for help. That’s not their way. But this time, they need it.

So we’re asking for them.

I gave a pretty broad price gap because we are unsure of an exact total. That being said I want to let supporters know that any money not used towards the engine repair will be donated to Y2V for future projects.
