Hi there:) Im Jeanene and I could use a little help. My house is in need of some emergency repairs and the government resource I was counting on to help me achieve this, has decided not to assist me.
We have all faced challenges & difficulties & the world we are living in right now has certainly created even more uncertainty and hardship.
The reality of my situation is that I was not approved for the government grant programs that I believed were going to help me complete the necessary repairs to my home. Without these repairs, I will lose my home.
Financially speaking, I definitely qualify for the provincial government grants, however, when the Dept of Housing's inspector viewed my home, he expressed an opinion about it before even walking through it. He stated it was old & it would cost me money that I obviously dont have to bring it up to a new home standard. I dont dispute that. But, it wasnt my goal to rebuild it because its old, just to repair it to maintain it. That is apparently not the expectation or standard from a government standpoint. The house has some water damage to the back wall that needs to be addressed and it needs a new roof. Otherwise, its a very strong, well built home. The inspector told me during his walk through that the amount of grant money available wouldnt even cover the cost to have my roof done. I told him that wasnt accurate according to a previous estimate I had & after his walk through I got two more estimates, one of which was almost half the amount of the grant funds available.
I have also been without running water all summer. Its rather pointless to spend money on a water pump, pressure tank & installation if Im not going to be able to stay here.
I guess I shouldn't have been surprised when I received a letter from the Department of Housing a couple weeks after the inspector's visit, notifying me that my application was not approved for the home repair grant. I included a picture of it to verify my claim.
This was the Housing Department's decision, EVEN WITH advocacy from my local MLA which I had called on for their assistance due to Department of Housing's lengthy delays with my application. While waiting for approval for an EMERGENCY GRANT, which I was quite sure I would get, the damage continued to grow. Even with the preventative measures I took, I waited for help through 3 hurricane seasons, record rainfalls and high coastal winds.
It doesnt matter how unfair I feel the decision from the Department of Housing is. Dwelling on it wont change anything & I honestly dont have any more time to put into trying to get something done with this Department or to appeal their decision. IM OUT OF TIME. I either repair my home or lose it from continued water damage. I cant stay in it when the weather gets colder, with water that comes out of the ceilings instead of the faucets and a growing number of tarps to try to keep the weather from causing further damage to the back wall. This is what Im facing and now Im facing it without any financial assistance from the government grants that I had no reason to beĺieve I wouldnt receive. The good news is that its not even as bad as it appeared, initially. I have been assured by a trusted contractor that the damage has not compromised the integrity of the home, including the roof and area of damage. It is still repairable if I can get the repairs completed before winter.
I have hesitated to reach out through this platform because I dont like asking anyone for anything. Im fiercely independant & pride myself on being self reliant. If I cant do it or afford it myself, then I cant do it. Period.
But, I dont want to lose my home
Im not looking for some kind of get rich quick scheme. In fact, Im old school. Crowdfunding is very unfamiliar to me. But, I feel Im out of options, so Ive decided to give this a try.
If you are from Nova Scotia & reading this, I would be happy to receive the supplies I need, in lieu of cash donations. I know there are tons of materials from construction sites or personal projects that are discarded & I would be grateful for the opportunity to pick them up before they go to the curb or a dumpster and ultimately, landfill. I can pick up many items myself in the south shore area from HRM to Shelburne County. It may be of added benefit to me if this gets shared with local contractors & carpenters. Luckily building centers & some private mills often deliver:)
Well....so much for quietly living my life & not drawing attention to myself. Lol It would actually help me out a lot if this got shared on the various social platforms that you use. I appreciate the support.
My thanks to the people who have already assisted me with some building materials:)
While it's true that I cant control some of the the things that have happened TO me, I can control how I respond to those things. Im continuing to do my best with what I have to work with & I continue to move forward, one day at a time, with Faith, hope & determination. I love my home. Its not perfect & its not new. Its 149 years old. And, its the big house near the ocean that I always wanted & it's mine:) Maybe government didn't think it was financially possible to complete the repairs for a reasonable cost. But it is. Maybe they didn't feel it was worth saving. But I do. Its my home and I love it:)
Even when things are difficult, there is still a lot of kindness in this world and it makes a world of difference. With sincerity and gratitude, I extend my thanks & appreciation to YOU for YOUR kindness:) Every little bit helps.
