Petaluma Odd Fellows: A Legacy of Caring and Community

Preserve Petaluma’s Historic Downtown – Help Save the Odd Fellows Building

In the heart of downtown Petaluma stands a piece of living history: the Petaluma Odd Fellow Building, established in 1854. For more than 170 years, it has watched over generations of growth, change, celebration, and struggle. And now, this iconic structure — a quiet anchor in the historic district — is at risk of decay.

We’re the Petaluma Odd Fellows, a fraternal organization that has called this building home since its first brick was laid. Through every era, we’ve believed in living by example — putting community first, offering support quietly and humbly, and striving to leave things better than we found them.

Here is some of the things we've done in the community over our 170 years:
  • Established the Petaluma Public Library in 1867
  • Covered medical and burial expenses for hundreds of members of the community
  • Helped a young athlete realize his dreams of going to the Olympics
  • Thousands of general donations over the last 170 years to people or projects in Petaluma.
  • Feeding and clothing the unhoused and less fortunate
  • We didn't charge our tenants rent during the start of COVID and charged reduced rent through much of the Pandemic, to ensure their businesses would survive.

Now, we’re asking the community we’ve served for over 170 years to help us in return.

Our Goal

We’re launching Phase 1 of a 3-part restoration project to preserve this building and honor the legacy it represents. This phase focuses solely on the front facade and dormers, with plans to:
• Repair and restore historic metalwork
• Fix wood rot and replace damaged materials
• Stop water intrusion
• Repaint the building in historically accurate colors
• Revive the craftsmanship that once made it a crown jewel of downtown

The first phase is estimated to cost upwards of $500,000, and the Odd Fellows are contributing $250,000 to get it started.

Now, we’re asking for your help to raise the remaining $250,000 by Summer 2025, our target completion date.

We are estimating the following phases dealing with the back of the building and fire suppression could be close to $1,000,000 so if we are fortunate enough to exceed our goal, the remains funds will be applied to phases 2 and 3.

Why This Matters

The Odd Fellow Building at 111 Petaluma Blvd North isn’t just old — it’s historic. It’s one of the oldest buildings downtown and part of what gives Petaluma its distinct character. But time and weather have taken a toll, and if left alone, the damage will only get worse.

The facade and dormers are deteriorating. The metalwork is rusted through in places, allowing water to seep inside. There’s visible wood rot, peeling paint, and general disrepair. Without urgent attention, the building could fall into irreversible decline.

Why the Odd Fellows?

We don’t just occupy this building — we’ve spent the last 170+ years quietly giving back to Petaluma. Our values are rooted in Friendship, Love, and Truth. We believe that all people deserve respect, dignity, and support. We help where we can, when we can — not for recognition, but because it’s the right thing to do.

From caring for tenants during hard times to contributing to countless community needs over the decades, we’ve done our part to make the community a better place for over 170 years.

Now we’re turning to our neighbors to help us protect a piece of shared history.
