In November 2023, we lost our Dad to small cell lung cancer. Like so many families impacted by cancer, our lives changed forever.

To honour his memory, our family created the Pedal to Peak Challenge, a journey that represents resilience, determination, and the strength our Dad showed throughout his life.

This year marks the 3rd annual Pedal to Peak challenge! Over the past two years, we have raised an incredible €48,000.00 in generous donations; funding four Cancer Research Stimulus (CREST) Awards that are now active innovative research projects dedicated to small cell lung cancer (SCLC) at the Trinity-St James’s Cancer Institute.

In the first year of the study researchers found that Natural Killer (NK) cell therapy may be a promising option in the treatment of SCLC. Their findings also suggest that chemotherapy-resistant SCLC tumours may interact differently with NK cells than chemotherapy-sensitive tumours, highlighting the need for further research and experimentation. We are also proud that our fundraising efforts contributed to Trinity-St James’s becoming Ireland’s first Comprehensive Cancer Institute.

We are back in the saddle on Friday 14 August 2026! We will set off from our family home in Naas on a 250km cycle to Croagh Patrick before taking on the climb to the summit of the iconic 2,500ft mountain.

What makes this year even more special is seeing more of our family and friends joining us for the challenge. Knowing so many people are helping us honour our Dad’s memory while supporting this important cause makes every kilometre even more meaningful.

This challenge isn’t about the distance; it’s about carrying forward our Dad’s legacy as a devoted husband, father and gaga, and remembering the brilliant Consultant Surgeon he was – someone who believed deeply in the power of science to save lives.

Small Cell Lung Cancer remains one of the most aggressive and underfunded forms of cancer research. All donations from this year’s fundraiser will go directly to the Trinity-St James’s Cancer Institute to help fund more life-changing research.
