Who are the Peaky Climbers?

At first, it was a throw away idea following discussions of prostate cancer percentages within Wales, now it's actually happening!

The group consists of meek and inexperienced climbers, all with a common goal...to raise as much money for an incredible charity - Prostate Cymru a charity that started life in 2003 (formally known as GLAZE), to create a level playing field, where men in Wales didn't need to travel to England and pay the English NHS or the private sector for prostate therapies that should be available on the Welsh NHS.

1 in 5 men in Wales with prostate cancer diagnosed too late for a cure...

Wales is one of several UK regions being left behind in a cancer 'postcode lottery', with latest data showing a huge variation in the likelihood of patients being diagnosed after their cancer has spread beyond the prostate and become incurable! In Wales 19% of men with prostate cancer are diagnosed with metastatic disease, compared to just 12.5% in London.

Overall, more than 500 men are diagnosed with Stage 4 metastatic prostate cancer EVERY YEAR in Wales.

By increasing awareness of prostate cancer risk and enabling more men to make an informed choice about whether to have a PSA test reduces the proportion of men diagnosed with metastatic disease.

The Peaky Climbers are partaking in a gruelling Fan Dance, a 24km SAS Selection test march staged over Pen Y Fan, the highest mountain in the Brecon Beacons. The infamous march is the world's oldest special forces test and is used as the first major indicator of whether a candidate has the physical and mental aptitude to complete the legendary selection course....All within the 7 Hour Cut Off!!

Prostate Cymru has no national or government funding and relies on the kindness and generosity of its fundraiser and volunteers to fulfil it's core aims:

1. Raising awareness about prostate cancer and prostate diseases. The dedicated awareness team provide free of charge workplace awareness sessions and talks to other groups.

2. Supporting treatments and improving equipment for prostate diseases and providing funding in training surgeons using the Da Vinci robot for minimally invasive prostate cancer surgery.

3. Funding Research and innovation across Wales to ensure that men in Wales suffering with prostate diseases will have access to the best available treatments from the NHS in Wales.

4. Supporting the education of medical professionals and students through online learning resources and travelling fellowship.

The hearts that give, gathers and no act of kindness, no matter how small, is ever wasted.
