In September this year we will be doing The National Three Peaks Challenge, which involves climbing the three highest peaks of Scotland, England and Wales, within 24 hours. We are doing this to raise money for the cancer charity PAWS GIST in support of our sister Rebecca, who was diagnosed with an extremely rare, incurable cancer in May last year at the age of 24.
It is important that these types of cancers (SDH deficient GIST’s) are found and treated early (via surgical removal), which unfortunately wasn’t an option for Rebecca as she already had metastatis to the liver at the time of diagnosis. If surgery is not an option for a patient with this cancer it is a very bleak outlook with very limited options which SDH deficient Gists are largely resistant to.
We are raising money to try to change this and help improve treatment options and stimulate research to find a cure. These tumors are often found in younger patients, including children and young adults however due to the rarity of this cancer it does not get funding like other more common types of cancers do.
Any donations would be very much appreciated & every penny brings us closer to a cure.
The challenge itself has only a 40% Success rate, the total walking distance is 23 miles (37km) and the total ascent is 3064 metres (10,052ft) - twice the ascent of the Yorkshire Three Peaks, over a similar total walking distance & the total driving distance is 462 miles
