How many opportunities do you have to simultaneously help the homeless and the environment?
PDX Bucks4Butts is a pilot program to pay individuals experiencing homelessness to pick up cigarette butts for recycling. Twin benefits are to provide income for individuals experiencing homelessness and as a green initiative to clean up Portland, OR. (Cigarette butts are among the most littered items in the world and the single greatest source of ocean trash.)
The collected butts are then sent to a recycling center to be made into plastic pellets to be used in new products such as park benches or shipping pallets.
Money collected will be used for program expenses: cigarette butt redemption fee, personal safety equipment such as gloves and masks for pickers and for overhead.
