The McKee Family Adoption Process
Donation protected
Chris and Haydn McKee are special people and a special couple.
After meeting at work, becoming friends, eventually dating, and getting engaged within just a few short months, one thing has been apparent throughout their entire relationship: their love for one another is unlike anyone in our lives.
Respect, admiration, and laughter are characteristics that you’ll always find in their Portland home. Chris, 44, is already a father to Zachary, 13, and Haydn, a wonderful step-mother to Zach, is 28. Before taking the next step and getting married, they made a pact; growing their family would be a top priority.
When the time came, adoption was the only way they would be able to honor their pact. For the better part of the last year, Haydn and Chris committed to the process; home interviews, background checks, decorating a nursery, and hours and hours spent reviewing potential matches with their adoption agent.
Finally, a match was found.
A baby girl was coming, and they had found their daughter. They even chose a name.
Chris and Haydn were able to connect with the birth mother, learn about her and her family, and unfortunately, learn of her hardships, too. They supported the birth mother during her pregnancy financially with a home, medical support, and doctor visits. The journey to becoming parents was difficult both financially and emotionally. When the call came and the birth mother went into labor, they were on an airplane 6 hours later and in route to Florida. Upon arriving, they immediately went to the hospital and met their new daughter. They held her, helped feed her, slept in the hospital with her, did skin-to-skin, sent pictures and videos to loved ones, and simply put, they fell in love.
After 48 hours, the time came for the birth mother to sign the adoption paperwork. Chris and Haydn would soon have their dream realized with the baby they already deeply loved. They went to the hospital that morning with the new car seat they had bought. They were excited to go home, put her in the nursery that Haydn had designed (complete with maps from their travels, dainty cloud pillows that she had hand sewn, and even empowering quotes sprinkled throughout the room to empower her new daughter), and have their friends and family meet their baby girl, the newest McKee.
However, that morning did not go as planned. The birth mother’s family interjected, and when the time came to sign, Chris and Haydn were told that would not happen. The family of the birth mother would keep the baby, despite their hardships or the addiction issues that the mother had.
Chris and Haydn, who had fallen in love with their new baby, were told that she would not be their daughter.
The adoption process, as our entire family has learned, is not an easy one. It is emotionally and physically draining. And, unfortunately, it is financially draining. Chris and Haydn exhausted their savings through this process and are back at square 1. They still hold the dream of becoming parents to a child who is yet to be born. They are devastated, deeply hurting, and despite emotionally recovering a little bit each day, they are still burdened with the finances that they lost.
The goal through this Go Fund Me is to help them get back into the adoption process as quickly as possible. Chris and Haydn are the two most deserving people, and you would be hard-pressed to find more devoted and wonderful parents. Despite their grief, they both hope to be able to help other families going through this process once they have their baby. But for now, it’s our turn. It’s our turn to help this wonderful couple get back in the game as quickly as possible. To do that, they need a little help. Please consider giving, no matter how big or small, to who we believe are the two worthiest people imaginable.
Thank you.
