Theo is the best boy. No, really. He is a puffy cloud of love in the world… a walking hug. He is the most incredibly sweet dog I have ever known. On Sunday, 6/25, he was out for a walk when he was attacked by another dog that was off leash, resulting in serious injuries and a pretty big (and obviously unexpected) vet bill.

Thanks in advance for any contribution you are able to make to help us cover these expenses and still pay rent this month. We feel lucky he survived this attack. He is such a core, central part of our family, and we would all be devastated if we suddenly lost him.

Funds will be used to cover his veterinary expenses and general cost of his care to recover.

The details of what happened to Theo and his treatment: Theo was on a leash (of course) with his dad on a regular walk (which happened to be during the Pride March in Greenwich Village). As they walked past an outdoor table at a restaurant, an off-leash dog jumped out from under the table and attacked Theo without provocation. Without giving brutal details, it was bad and took five adults to get the other dog to let Theo go.

At the emergency vet's office, Theo had to have an immediate surgery under general anesthesia to assess the damage, clean and close the neck wounds, and place a wound drain. He has multiple puncture wounds as well as a tear that went all the way through the muscle tissue. His skin was also torn apart from the muscle, leaving an air pocket. He got many stitches internally and externally. He is now recovering at home on various medications (pain meds/sedation and antibiotics). Since he made it through the surgery okay, his biggest risk now is possible infection. He will have additional vet visits to assess the wounds, check the drain, eventually remove the drain (if all goes well) and to remove the external stitches. So far, he seems to be doing really well recovering and will have a minimum two weeks of doggy bed rest and healing.
