Pay Ashlee — Because Organizing is Labour
Donation protected
Vancouver actor, comedian, producer, and friend Ashlee Ferral has been holding Vancouver Theatre Sports accountable for their culture of white supremacy and misogyny in an enduring and brave campaign on social media. Her labour is organizing work for which Ashlee should be compensated financially.
I am organizing this with Ashlee's consent. We agreed that $20/hour x 100 hours is appropriate as a start. If we exceed that goal, I will consult with Ashlee on how she would like to direct or use the funds, the decision will be entirely hers. I am not receiving any of the money, it will go directly to Ashlee to compensate her for her much-needed and much-appreciated work.
In addition to the labour of holding problematic institutions accountable, it is my hope that this money will provide some small amount of additional financial security because of the significant impact of COVID on her career (she moved to LA earlier this year and had to return once COVID obliterated the LA production industry). Indeed surviving a pandemic that disproportionately harms Black communities (in the US, and we would know that about Canada too, if only Canada collected this information), is something no amount of money can compensate for.
To learn more about her efforts to hold Vancouver Theatre Sports accountable, which were triggered by their out-of-touch participation in the #blackouttuesday meme, visit her Instagram and read the Highlight "Stand w Us" https://www.instagram.com/ashlee_ferral/
I will type out her stories/highlights below (come back soon, or just visit her IG)
NOTE: it says the payee is me but that's because I set it up, again 100% of what is donated will go to Ashlee.
