Paul's Homeplace
Donation protected
I am Mike Devine, a fortunate man with a lot to be grateful for. I have been blessed with a loving family, and a strong group of friends. Sue and I live on a farm in Mineral Springs, North Carolina. We bought the land in pieces from the Austin family, Ormand and Sadie, over several years. Ormand passed away in 2011 leaving Sadie and their son Paul. Sadie passed in 2020 leaving just Paul.
Paul doesn't drive and lives with chronic pain because of physical conditions but has really picked himself up and learned how to make it work on his own with just a little help. I take Paul to the grocery store, and to doctor appointments, and generally look out for him. He knows he can call me anytime if he needs help and it has been working for us.
We told Sadie that she and Paul could stay here as long as they wanted and were able. The trailer Paul lives in is at the end of it's lifespan. I have looked into making repairs, but it is really beyond repair. I want to do something to improve his living conditions and with your help, we can do it. We are looking at finishing out a tiny home / shed building or a mobile home. Just something new / newer for Paul to call home. We think with the budget we've allotted and some sweat equity, we can pull together and make a difference in this man's life.
We have asked ourselves, if we knew the property we were buying came with Paul, would we still buy it? We would. Paul has become a very special part of this farm and our family.
We believe it is better for Paul and the community of Mineral Springs to keep him on this land where he was born for as long as he likes. We are asking for the community to give. No donation is too small. Every dollar given will go to help create a better living situation for Paul and improve his quality of life.
Our Plan:
Arrange temporary living space for Paul as project gets started.
Bring in and build out a new structure on our farm for Paul to live in. (picture is our inspiration)
Help find and buy furnishings for this new home.
