If you know the history of the island of Bougainville, you will know how the conflict fought from 1989 to 1999 cost thousands of lives and devastated the island's economy. Only now has Bougainville recovered enough to move on. It is a critical time in the island's history.
In a historic referendum in 2019, the people of Bougainville voted overwhelmingly for political independence. In a few weeks time in mid June 2020, elections will be held. Due to the landslide result of the 2019 Bougainville Referendum (98 per cent for political independence), the coming election is an important and crucial one, as the 'new' Bougainville government will be negotiating with the Papua New Guinea (PNG) national government to "ratify" this result. Apart from this, the new government of Bougainville will have a mammoth responsibility to move the region forward to revive the economy and handle legacy issues still outstanding. Therefore, the Autonomous Region of Bougainville needs exemplary leaders, ones with great skill, to revive the island and bring it into a new era. This time more crucial due to the 98 per cent stake.
The President of the Autonomous Bougainville Government 2020 – 2025 is the most important position to be filled.
You will not find a better person in the autonomous region to handle the challenge than Chief Paul Nerau. Paul has been instrumental in contributing to Bougainville prior to the crisis, during the crisis, and after the crisis, at the different levels and sectors he has been involved in.
He has a degree in Law and has over 46 years of experience in legal, corporate and strategic management and leadership in government and political circles, private business sector and industry (mining, oil, gas, agriculture, fisheries etc) and non-government (civil society, community and faith-based groups) sector at the international, regional (within the Pacific), national and local level.
Former CEO of the Bougainville Development Corporation before the crisis, Papua New Guinea’s Consul General in Brisbane Australia, Chairman of KCH Holdings for the PNG government are just a few of Paul's credentials. He has demonstrated qualities of strategic and visionary leadership, alongside moral ethics and necessary experiences - and it all adds up to an amazing track record.
Paul has the balance of local knowledge and history, commercial and political nous, international presence, and a humble approach when dealing with people at all levels.
Paul is the right man at the right time to lead the people of Bougainville into the future.
Bougainville can be great again, and by helping Chief Mr. Paul Nerau become president of the Autonomous Bougainville Government you will have played a vital part in reviving this once vibrant society.
