I have opened this Go Fund Me page for my dad as people have expressed an interest to raise money for him specifically, enabling him to help create nice memories and go towards adaptions / alternative therapies for the future.
Pauls first symptom was the slurring of the odd word in December 2023.
In April 2024 his speech suddenly became much worse. He attended A&E and it was suspected he had suffered a stroke so he was sent for an MRI. The results were negative, it was noticed he had a droopy eyelid and he was referred to Neurology.
He was diagnosed with Myasthenia Gravis in July 2024.
Since his diagnosis, his journey has taken a lot of twists and turns, he was also told they could not rule out MND but only time would tell.
Unfortunately he has had to face his worst fear when he was formally diagnosed as having Bulbar MND in August 2025, he could also have both conditions of MND and Myasthenia Gravis, though there isn't a formal test to confirm both.
Bulbar MND effects primarily the throat and neck but it can spread to other parts of the body as it progresses. Fatigue is a big part of the illness, too. While initially it only effects bulbar muscles, swallowing and speech, individuals may develop weakness in their arms and legs, which is considered a from of Amyotrophic Lateral Asclerosis (ALS)
Many people with ALS will develop Bulbar involvement at some stage of their illness.
With Bulbar MND, stats suggest a much shorter life expectancy (6 months – 2 Years)
For now Paul is trying to keep active as he can whilst managing his fatigue and symptoms.
He has put fatigue management into place by reducing his working hours and playing the game he loves, Football.
We have created this Go Fund Me page to help support Paul through his journey and help create some positive memories with his family. We also want to help him with the cost of communication aids, alternative therapies such as physio etc and home adaptations of which there is very little financial help for MND sufferer’s and their families.
We have earmarked a few positive memories we would like to create, and we aim for the list to grow:
- Wembley and Crystal Palace Stadium tours
- Ted Lasso film locations
- Days out to airfields and museums
- Ypres Visit
- Hull City Stadium tour and pitch experience
As a final note, I have managed to secure a place at London Marathon 2027 via his running club.
I have paid for the place himself and it's not a charity place - however, should anyone want to donate to a cause for his efforts, I ask people to donate to this Go Fund Me to help support Paul.
