My name is Patty. I am desperate to help my 75-year-old mom get a new roof so she can sell her place and move in with me. Her house is falling apart, and she was told her roof will not last another Michigan winter. It WILL fall in on her; some of the ceilings are already falling in.
My father died during COVID, in 2020. Unbeknownst to my mother, he left her $6,000 behind on the mortgage payments, and it was in foreclosure. He only had a $10,000 life insurance policy, most of which was used to pay the past due balance. The rest was used to lay him to rest.
My brothers and I are doing all we can to help, but it's just not enough. Mom gets some help from the state along with her social security, and they only offered to pay $1,500 of the $20,000 roof repair estimate.
If we can raise enough money to get her roof fixed, I feel she may be able to sell it. It is only worth about what she owes, so anything we can raise above the cost of the roof will go towards adding a mother-in-law suite onto my house so she still has her privacy and independence.
