Newsroom workers for The Palm Beach Post and Palm Beach Daily News will go on strike June 5 in an effort to secure liveable wages, decent healthcare and job stability from Gannett, the company that owns these newspapers. And we need your support.

Gannett is America’s biggest newspaper publisher. It owns The Post and Daily News, along with hundreds more across the United States. But instead of keeping community newspapers well-funded, it has decimated newsrooms, cut jobs and left cities and towns without local journalists to cover communities. Many of those who remain are not paid enough to live in the places they were hired to cover.

The Post and Daily News each have lost about half of our newsroom staff over the past three years alone. And the number of daily local news articles has also fallen by the same amount.

Our newsroom workers, represented by The Palm Beach News Guild, have tried for almost three years to bargain a fair contract with Gannett that offers liveable wages to attract and retain talented staff that would improve local news coverage. But Gannett has dragged its feet negotiating such an agreement.

That’s why we are joining other Gannett-owned newsrooms nationwide to strike for one day in June. This fundraiser would cover lost wages for that day.

If our members are hit by Gannett revoking paid time off or cutting salaried pay, we would use donations past $2,500 to help them.

Otherwise, donations past that amount will be used for future union actions or costs; donated to a reputable charity; or used in another way to help the community or further the cause of local journalism.
