Door Number Three is the latest initiative by Mothers and Men Against Senseless Killings (MASK). The program reimagines education in Chicago while simultaneously reducing gun violence. In 2019, the Chicago Public Schools announced the closing of all of the high schools in the city’s Englewood neighborhood, leaving  hundreds of teenagers without a school close to home. MASK understood immediately that this situation put more young people at risk and decided to fill the vacuum. Door Number Three is the alternative to teens getting killed or going to jail – classes will be held in repurposed shipping containers, first on 75th and Stewart Avenue and later all around the city’s south and west sides.  The classrooms are cost-effective and can be built out on vacant lots throughout Chicago. We know that we can’t accommodate all of the kids who need a high school, but we also know that we have to do something to fight the poverty, crime, and gang infestation that harms too many of our children. A kid in school is less likely to kill someone or be the victim of a senseless killing themselves. Door Number Three is the opening to a new and better future for Chicago’s children.
