Paddling the Devizes to Westminster (DW) to Support Dal Dy Dir (Hold Your Ground)
In August last year, after 20 years out of a kayak, I decided to get back on the water with the aim of completing the Devizes to Westminster (DW) Kayak Race. I’ll be racing in a K2 with my sister Sarah, who herself has taken almost 30 years away from the sport.
But this challenge is about much more than finishing one of the toughest endurance races in the UK. We’re taking it on to raise money for Nant Conwy's Dal Dy Dir (Hold Your Ground) campaign.
Dal Dy Dir was created to support mental health within the club and the wider Conwy Valley community. Nant is far more than just a place where people come to play rugby. It is a community hub where friendships are built, people support one another through difficult times, and where younger generations learn the values of resilience, teamwork and belonging. Dal Dy Dir initiative aims to strengthen that role by helping create a culture where conversations about mental health are open and normal, and where people feel supported rather than isolated when they are struggling.
The campaign helps the club develop resources, awareness and support around mental health, ensuring players, members and supporters know they have somewhere to turn and people who will listen. In communities like ours, that kind of support network can make a real difference.
Our own journey to the start line has been far from straightforward. My sister works as a Producer Director and has spent the past five years filming in the Arctic and Antarctic for BBC's David Attenborough's Blue Planet III. When she is in the UK she lives near Stroud in Gloucestershire. I have been busy building a relatively new company, which has meant spending much of the past year travelling and away from home in North Wales.
Because of this, time training together has been incredibly limited. By the time we reach the start line, we will have paddled together just six times. Many crews spend a year or more paddling together several times a week to prepare, so we certainly haven’t made it easy for ourselves.
Despite that, our aim is simple: to complete the course. The Devizes to Westminster is a gruelling challenge, covering 125 miles (200 km) from Devizes to London with 77 portages (getting out and carrying the boat around locks) along the way. If we can finish somewhere close to 24 hours, we’ll be delighted; not out of sporting ambition, but simply to avoid the rather brutal prospect of paddling for much longer than a full day.
Taking on this challenge gives us the opportunity to support something that matters deeply to our community. Every donation helps support the Dal Dy Dir (Hold Your Ground) and the work being done to make sure that people in our community know they are not alone and always have somewhere to turn.
If you are able to support us, thank you. Your encouragement and generosity will help carry us through every mile of the race.

Padlo Ras Devizes i Westminster (DW) i Gefnogi Dal Dy Dir
Ym mis Awst y llynedd, ar ôl 20 mlynedd allan o gaiac, penderfynais fynd yn ôl ar y dŵr gyda’r nod o gwblhau Devizes to Westminster Race. Byddaf yn rasio mewn cwch K2 gyda fy chwaer Sarah, sydd hithau wedi bod bron i 30 mlynedd allan o’r gamp.
Ond mae’r her yma yn ymwneud â llawer mwy na dim ond gorffen un o’r rasys dygnwch anoddaf yn y DU. Rydym yn ei wneud i godi arian ar gyfer ymgyrch Dal Dy Dir gan Nant Conwy Rugby Football Club.
Crëwyd Dal Dy Dir i gefnogi iechyd meddwl o fewn y clwb ac ar draws cymuned ehangach Dyffryn Conwy. Mae Nant yn llawer mwy na dim ond lle mae pobl yn dod i chwarae rygbi. Mae’n ganolbwynt cymunedol lle mae cyfeillgarwch yn cael eu ffurfio, lle mae pobl yn cefnogi ei gilydd drwy gyfnodau anodd, ac mae’r genhedlaeth iau yn dysgu gwerthoedd fel gwydnwch, gwaith tîm a pherthyn.
Nod menter Dal Dy Dir yw cryfhau’r rôl honno drwy helpu i greu diwylliant lle mae sgyrsiau am iechyd meddwl yn agored ac yn naturiol, a lle mae pobl yn teimlo eu bod yn cael cefnogaeth yn hytrach na theimlo’n unig pan fydd pethau’n anodd.
Mae’r ymgyrch yn helpu’r clwb i ddatblygu adnoddau, codi ymwybyddiaeth a chynnig cefnogaeth ynghylch iechyd meddwl, gan sicrhau bod chwaraewyr, aelodau a chefnogwyr yn gwybod bod ganddynt rywle i droi a phobl fydd yn gwrando. Mewn cymunedau fel ein cymuned ni, gall rhwydwaith o’r fath wneud gwahaniaeth mawr.
Nid yw ein taith ni tuag at y llinell gychwyn wedi bod yn syml. Mae fy chwaer yn gweithio fel Producer Director ac wedi treulio’r pum mlynedd diwethaf yn ffilmio yn yr Arctig a’r Antarctig ar raglen BBC's Blue Planet III gyda David Attenborough. Pan mae hi yn y DU mae hi’n byw ger Stroud yng Nghaerloyw.
Yn y cyfamser, rwyf wedi bod yn brysur yn adeiladu cwmni cymharol newydd, sydd wedi golygu teithio’n aml a threulio llawer o’r flwyddyn ddiwethaf i ffwrdd o adref yng Ngogledd Cymru.
O ganlyniad i hyn, mae’r amser i hyfforddi gyda’n gilydd wedi bod yn gyfyngedig iawn. Erbyn i ni gyrraedd y llinell gychwyn byddwn ond wedi padlo gyda’n gilydd chwe gwaith. Mae llawer o dimau yn hyfforddi sawl gwaith yr wythnos am flwyddyn neu fwy i baratoi, felly nid ydym wedi gwneud pethau’n hawdd i ni ein hunain.
Serch hynny, mae ein nod yn syml: cwblhau’r cwrs. Mae ras Devizes i Westminster yn her eithriadol o galed, yn ymestyn dros 125 milltir (200 km) o Devizes i Lundain gyda 77 portage ar hyd y ffordd – hynny yw, gorfod dod allan o’r dŵr a chario’r cwch o gwmpas y cloeon.
Os gallwn orffen rhywle yn agos i 24 awr byddwn yn hapus iawn; nid oherwydd uchelgais chwaraeon, ond yn syml i osgoi’r posibilrwydd eithaf creulon o badlo am lawer mwy na diwrnod cyfan.
Mae cymryd yr her yma yn rhoi cyfle i ni gefnogi rhywbeth sy’n bwysig iawn i’n cymuned. Mae pob rhodd yn helpu i gefnogi Dal Dy Dir a’r gwaith sy’n cael ei wneud i sicrhau bod pobl yn ein cymuned yn gwybod nad ydynt ar eu pennau eu hunain a bod rhywle bob amser i droi.
Os gallwch chi ein cefnogi, diolch o galon. Bydd eich cefnogaeth a’ch haelioni yn ein helpu ni drwy bob milltir o’r ras.
