Olivia is 14 years old and in the 7th grade. She is a smart, fun, and happy girl that loves animals, playing with her twin sister, three younger siblings, cousins, and friends. Olivia was born with a rare birth defect where she cannot eat and digest food. We dream of a normal life for Olivia, where she would not be required to be connected to machines, pumps, and IV lines where she receives life sustaining nutrients and fluids.Olivia spent the first 2 ½ years of her life in a hospital setting, that entailed her family having to relocate from Syracuse to Brooklyn NY where we were able to have family support while she received care. The first 2 ½ years of her life were very uncertain. Her original diagnosis of Megacystis Micro colon Intestinal Hypoperistalsis Syndrome (MMIHS) is one that most people have never heard of. Most children with this birth defect do not make it into adulthood. During these years, Olivia underwent multiple surgeries. She has a feeding tube, multiple central IV line placements, an Ileostomy, and the list goes on.Olivia’s health continues to decline with stays at multiple high level hospitals from Columbia Presbyterian, Boston children’s Hospital, to Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh. The past 2 years Olivia has been hospitalized every month, if not twice a month at our local children’s hospital (Upstate Gollisano Children’s Hospital) for infections. At our last doctor’s appointment in Pittsburgh, it was determined that Olivia will need an intestinal transplant to save her life.Olivia’s impending surgery and long term medical care may require her mother to give up her full time job as a Registered Nurse to relocate to Pittsburgh.
