Buddha’s 109 East Hastings - community led restoration

Help restore and re-open 109 East Hastings for community / cultural services in the Downtown Eastside <3

109 East Hastings, site of the former Smilin Buddha Cabaret 1952-1990, SBC 2013-2019 - and now Buddha's - was damaged Aug 19th 2023 when a fire set in the alley/dumpster spread to the building. The space provided a platform for thousands of musicians, visual artists, workshops, and storage for outdoor community services & events.

It was put out thanks to Vancouver Fire Departments quick action & the open room - but the smoke damaged everything inside, and sets the project back year(s) without support.

The money raised so far has seriously helped move forward with cleanup/fire remediation, instead of walking away from this important project, leaving the site at risk of demolition.

Reaching $10-20K will help offset the massive costs associated with further renovations and remodelling.

We are advocating for the property to be put under community-led ownership, allowing for a full restoration and responsible operation long term.

109 East Hastings has been a cultural landmark for over 100 years, housing Lige Scurry's social club, the Broadway Cafe, Smilin Buddha Dine and Dance in 1952, Smilin' Buddha Cabaret in the 60s through 80s, Sports Cafe in the 90s, SBC Restaurant from 2013-2019, and now Buddha's.

It’s one of Vancouver’s most legendary music venue, having hosted Jimi Hendrix, 54-40, Tina Turner, DOA in the 80’s, in recent years up and coming groups like Felisha & the Jazz Rejects, Slightest Clue, Nuclear Disco & countless more.

After hosting 150 concerts, art shows, workshops and outreach programs between Nov 2021 and March 2023 as Buddha’s - the space was under renovation and set to re-open December 2023.
