The Vision
We’re raising funds to build a statue of Owain Lawgoch in Wales – a powerful symbol to honour one of our nation’s most remarkable, yet often forgotten, heroes.

Owain Lawgoch (Owain ap Thomas ap Rhodri) was the last direct descendant of the royal House of Gwynedd, and a fierce defender of Welsh identity. In the 14th century, he led a campaign to reclaim the throne of Wales and fought with honour across Europe. Known in France as Yvain de Galles, he became a commander in the French army during the Hundred Years’ War – and is still celebrated there for his leadership and bravery. In 1378, he was assassinated on the orders of King Richard II of England, a tragic end to a life devoted to the cause of Welsh independence.

Why This Matters
Today, a statue of Owain stands proudly in Mortagne-sur-Gironde, France - built in 2003 by a Welsh sculptor using Welsh slate and French limestone. It was made possible by the passion and dedication of Welsh historians and cross-national support.

But in Wales – Owain’s homeland – there is no monument.

It’s time to change that.

Our Goal
We want to erect a statue of Owain Lawgoch in Wales, where his story belongs. This will be more than just a sculpture – it will be a lasting tribute to Welsh identity, courage, and resistance.

Funds raised will go towards:
  • Commissioning a professional sculptor to design and create the statue
  • Sourcing and transporting high-quality, symbolic materials (including Welsh stone)
  • Securing a public site (proposed: Gower Heritage Centre)
  • Covering installation, inscription, and surrounding display elements
  • Supporting associated cultural events and community education

A Growing Movement
This campaign is part of a larger effort to build awareness. Kevin Bowen, who previously cycled from Cross Hands, Wales, to Mortagne-sur-Gironde to raise attention for Owain’s story, will repeat the journey in July 2025. This time, he’ll promote ongoing collaboration between France and Wales, with plans to establish annual community events alternating between both countries every 22nd of July - the anniversary of Owain’s assassination.

These events will celebrate history, build unity, and raise funds for the monument until it becomes a reality.

How You Can Help
Whether you donate £5 or £500, you’re contributing to something lasting and meaningful. Let’s come together as a community - across borders - to honour Owain’s legacy in the land where it began.

Let’s bring Owain Lawgoch home.
