Outreach Program For At Risk Youth
Hi my name is Fway and I am fundraising for a female minority, black owned, big sister apprenticeship for at risk youth. Giving the youth of today a safe place to go where they can find themselves, be heard, achieve confidence in learning new traits and skills with positive guidance and reassurance. Our apprenticeship assists in making them realize they are important, they matter, and are not just average teens who become statistics.
A lot of us acknowledge the fact there is a huge problem that continues to grow with the way this current generation maneuvers in society. However, there is not enough people taking initiative to correct the problem. It takes a village to raise a child. Who is going to be our future doctors, lawyers, Corporate Presidents, etc.? These kids seem to have no aspirations and hold their feelings in until they exhibit negative behavior. Our goal is to give them a place to be comfortable and express themselves freely before it gets to this point. We need to teach them to be above the rest.
With a vast array of volunteers and professionals some of the things we teach our youth are web design and development, business and marketing, engineering, life skills, home ownership, the importance of establishing and maintaining good credit, how to do hair, make natural beauty products, nails, teeth whiting, cooking, baking, gardening, etc.
Our youth also get to experience fun positive activities i.e. learning how to grow plants and keep them alive and healthy, arts & crafts, pottery, engineering (building robots, hydroponic systems / how to create energy with natural resources, book club, vision boards and journals, camping (learning survival skills including fishing), board games, field day (flag football, shuttle run, capture the flag, man hunt, tug a war, obstacle course), field trips (visiting museums, historical sites, zoo, aquarium, etc.)
We also give back to the community by having our youth volunteer with food drives, toy drives , assisted living, animal shelters, habitat for humanity, grocery shopping for the elderly, and more. Volunteering in those places opens an opportunity for each individual to experience the joy of giving back and helping one another as well as what it may be like working in that field to potentially pursue a career. This also gives these children a great chance to build their resumes for their future endeavors.
Unfortunately, I don’t have the bandwidth or financial resources to distribute this to multiple youth so I’m looking for support to be able to do so. We currently have 4 girls who are in our program (Alana 15 years old; Amiah 14 years old; Rinyah 15 years old; and Esme 12 years old) and would love to expand to many others. This not only benefits our youth but our community as a whole.
I’ve already built the foundation at The Sugar Trap, which currently serves as a galleria for entrepreneurs and small business owners, including myself. The proceeds from the products that are sold and events that are held at The Sugar Trap are being used to help fund this cause. No donation or contribution is too small. If you feel more comfortable making a purchase rather then donating to this cause, that would be appreciated just the same.
