Greetings!
My name is Debbie Rubin Ames.
As you may know, the Our Town newspaper was created in 1948 by my parents, Len & Lil Rubin. With my Dad's journalism passion and my Mother's tireless management efforts, together they unwittingly archived a 48-year detailed slice of Maywood and Rochelle Park's amazing history.
Today, I am undertaking an effort to preserve and present that history for generations to come.
Fortunately, my parents were far-sighted enough to keep hard bound copies of each annual edition of Our Town for future reference. My husband and I have purchased a book copying machine and have begun the task of copying each of the 44,000+ pages for the purpose of digitizing them (including photographs and advertisements) so that they may be made accessible to the public at no charge. The digital images will be indexed by year and month and will be key-word searchable.
Our hope is that the archive will be accessed via the Maywood Public Library's web site and we are presently in discussion with the Library Board regarding this and ongoing funding for this project. Meanwhile, we hope to make this available thru a link on Facebook (details to be announced later).
We are now appealing to you to help raise the necessary seed money to get the first four copied years uploaded to a publicly accessible web site where you can search for the topics of your choice.
Please consider a donation today of any amount that will help us attain this modest goal. If we are fortunate enough to exceed our fundraising goal, any remaining funds will be applied to uploading additional years of the Our Town newspaper.
Thank you in advance for helping us preserve Maywood & Rochelle Park history!
Sincerely,
Debbie Rubin Ames and Jeff Ames
