Our Dad and Motor Neurone Disease - Help Him Live his Best Life

 

Our Dad, Shawn is 52 and has recently been diagnosed with Motor Neurone Disease. We are all devastated and want to help him live his best life now and to help assist him with issues he is currently facing and adaptations in his home and daily life. The life span of someone who has MND is usually 2-5 years however, it kills a third of people within a year and more than half within two years of diagnosis.

 

We would love to help our Dad with his bucket list, the things he and Mum had planned to do in their retirement together.

 

How it all started - Dad felt a weakness in his right arm at the end of last year which has now progressed to his left arm and leg and now affects his speech and swallow. Everything has progressed very quickly since the start of this year.

 

His voice has been recorded and banked to enable him to communicate via a speech-generating communication device.

 

He has had brain CT and MRI scans, electromyography tests and is considering a PEG feeding tube to help his body receive the nutrition it needs.

 

There is no treatment or cure for the disease and sadly he is terminally ill.

 

Our Mum has had to reduce her working hours to a minimum to help Dad with day to day duties and sadly he can no longer work himself which has been the case since the new year.

We want Pops to live his best life now and all wish to do our best to help support him.

 

We hope one day that a cure will be found for this horrendous disease.
