April 2026 Update
We are continuing to offer all of our services, free of charge to anyone. The food is still our main draw, but childrens' uniforms and clothing is a close second. We have over 1,000 books and hundreds of toys. We offer free nappies and sanitary items for ladies. And we are still running litter picks and other community events.
Since we opened our doors more than 5 years ago we have seen over 5,000 different people, and we regularly get over 500 customers each week. We have made over 6,000 collections from supermarkets across East Devon and Exeter and distributed enough food to make over 650,000 meals.
In 3 years we have given out nearly 45,000 items of childrens' clothing. We have stocked nearly 30 different school uniforms and handed out thousands of toys and books.
Everything we do has always been free to whoever visits. We do not ask any questions and there is no "qualification". Bring in the clothes and books your children have grown out of, and take the more suitable size home with you.
There are 60 volunteers giving their time each week and we have now had over 400 volunteers in total, including 26 Duke of Edinburgh students. The ages of our volunteers have ranged from babes in arms to 91.
We keep costs to an absolute minimum. We pay rent, electric and gas, insurance and cleaning. We also subscribe to Fareshare who distribute nationally donated food from supermarkets. The total running costs are around £10,000 per year.
Many of you will know that our current premises, The Old Boys School is due to be converted into housing in the near future and we will need to find a new location. That will incur extra expense and we need to be ready to move.
Please, and only if you can afford to, help us meet those running costs and keep the Larder going for another 5 years!
