Organic Salon Solution for Stylists' Dream

Dearest Dusty Blue Hair Designs clients, my friends, and connections -

 

This is a hard letter to write. Truly, this is a last-option effort to try and find some help and forward movement in this time of uncertainty for my dream of owning an Organic Salon.

As many of you know, I've embarked on a journey at the end of a major health scare of lymphoma of my eye from working around chemicals in hair color, with high hopes that I'd be welcoming you into my new Organic Salon to help support myself and many others to stay healthy while feeling beautiful.

I hoped to do that by now that Summer is upon us and business is beginning to look lively. If you look at my client book in its current state though, you'd know that’s not yet happening at this time.

 

Here’s where I'm at - just enough clients back from lockdown to pay for my chair rent for a few days /week and then, being presented with an opportunity to have a salon where other stylists' rent pays for the overhead, and I could create my dream of a unique and beautiful Organic Salon where I could train other stylists to move away from chemicals and into Organics, and then, the genuine possibility that this may never happen.

I have everything planned out: I've worked with the broker, on the construction, the design, the furnishings, the menu, and the collaboration with the residence team, but my funds have run out and I currently have an extended deadline to meet the financials for final approval. The truth is, even when you try to plan for all the exceptions, and trust higher power that all efforts will fulfill the dream, you just never know.

 

The build-out, negotiations, design, tools, supplies, furnishings, and decor have gone way beyond what anyone involved thought it would in terms of cost and time. Could I possibly make it one more year with my business as it is? Maybe. But the threat of people still being afraid of coming in due to Covid is real, and a single chair rental doesn't give the much-needed ROI without me actually owning my own salon and renting to other stylists (who would be the start of transforming this industry!)

 

This could definitely be my last chance to get into an opportunity like this - for 1/10th of the cost of other salon spaces! - at my age (while I'm getting older, I am still pretty fond of my lungs, eyes, back, and arms, so I’m glad that I have my health and haven't been exposed - hopefully that's a bridge not a single one of us ever has to cross). The last few years have felt like an epic feat of survival and with each year I have wondered anew if I would make it. Well, here I am, up against the wall. Asking for help.

I’ve been the recipient of such incredible generosity over the years that it is painful to ask for anything from the people who have kept me going - I don’t want to do this, and it's especially hard to ask on go-fund-me for others to be inspired to care enough to contribute. I also don’t want to imagine my world, this business, my life - without you on the other side of my chair. Is there hope for Dusty Blue Hair Designs to grow and expand? I'm not sure. But I think it’s worth asking before I make some hard decisions.

Dusty Blue Hair Designs has always existed through the sheer generosity of everyone involved. I have created something beautiful outside of a traditionally chemically-laden industry with the help of my supplier, salon clients, co-workers, and friends.

Now though, I am up against something I cannot complete with my own efforts-without the support and contribution of others, and while I keep-on-keeping-on, I'm not giving up yet.

I want to let you know how much I miss you, especially if you haven't come in since before the pandemic, and how much I appreciate you if you have! The new space will house not just my new Salon, it will be a space for flowers, and for healing and community events.

Heck, you might even see some very exceptional concierge services on my new menu.

 

This gratitude and desire are present in every smile line on my face. My business has built me friendships that will last forever and has seen so much love, laughter, and tears over my last 12 years of service, I am grateful and lucky to have had the true honor of providing this offering.
