Huge development threatens to overshadow regeneration zone on Leamouth Peninsula, home of Trinity Buoy Wharf and the English National Ballet - over 2000 lorries a day set to increase pollution on a massive scale!
Summary of the proposed development and residents' concerns
At the start of March 2021 a planning application (by Regal Homes) will be considered by Tower Hamlets Council that potentially has a significant impact on London City Island, Goodluck Hope, and Trinity Buoy Wharf.
The proposal is to develop the site bounded by the East India Dock Basin, GLH and Orchard Place. Planning permission is being sought to build six blocks of flats of up to 30 storeys (nearly 50% taller than the tallest building on LCI) and a ‘last mile’ distribution centre. Large containers will come up the Thames and be unloaded into vans, trucks and lorries for delivery around London.
Summary of potential impacts:
- Impacts of a working wharf in a predominantly residential area, including:
o Noise from the wharf operations and traffic, potentially operating 24x7
o Safety concerns for pedestrian traffic on Orchard Place, including to/from local schools
- Pollution from massive increase in vehicular traffic (up to 2592 additional vehicles per day, or 1 every 30 seconds)
- Further strain on public utilities and local transport
- Significant detrimental impacts to local wildlife
- Negative impact on local character of the area
You can read more about the planning application, and see responses from other relevant authorities, at the official Tower Hamlets planning site here:

What we propose to do, and why funds are needed
The LCI GLH Residents Association has already been working for many months to understand the proposed development, inform the local community, and encourage feedback on the plans via the formal planning process.
Whilst this has greatly increased awareness, and we are aware of an increasing volume of comments submitted via the planning site, a planning expert has suggested that we should prepare for the next steps if we wish to influence the decision being taken.
Your financial support is being requested so that:
1) We can engage a specialist lawyer to advise us on the best possible legal strategy that we can take and our available rights and remedies (including such actions as may be appropriate, such as a Judicial Review).
2) We can print and distribute documentation to further inform stakeholders and increase visibility of the potential impacts.
