Opening Doors for Art

At the McClellanville Arts Center, we believe that everyone is an artist. For more than forty-five years, we have brought creative opportunities to the northern end of Charleston County in coastal South Carolina, a struggling rural area. We offer classes, workshops, exhibits, and a shop where local artists and craftspeople show and sell their work.

Everyone is welcome at the MAC, and we have always tried to ensure that our facilities are fully accessible. But now, thanks to a generous grant from the South Carolina Arts Commission, we have a chance to do much more—to modify our two buildings in ways that will improve access for everyone, from those who use wheelchairs and walkers to parents with children in strollers and students who need accommodations.

Our buildings and grounds were recently evaluated by staff from Able South Carolina, a disability-led organization. The process made us aware of many small adjustments we could make that would improve our services. But we were also awarded $20,025 by the Arts Commission to make larger changes, and this money will allow us to update our signage, doorways, ramps, and restrooms to meet current ADA standards.

Here’s where you come in—in order to qualify for funding, we must match this money dollar for dollar, half by summer 2024 and the rest by summer 2025. Your donation, large or small, will help us make sure that every child and every adult can participate in our art classes, that every visitor can easily reach and use all features of our Arts Center, and that every artist and customer feel comfortable in our shop.
