University of Illinois Hillel is a large community with a relatively new building, and we love being able to share our space with students, family, and friends alike. In order to be open to all, we need to be accessible to all. We are fundraising with the goal of installing wheelchair accessible door activators at the beginning of the 2015-2016 school year. Please help us reach our goal by donating as much or as little as you can and spreading the word!
Current student Mark McCarthy shared with me why this campaign is important to him:
"As someone with a disability who relies on using a wheelchair, having automatic doors is a must. A place like Illini Hillel is especially important. Having automatic doors installed for Hillel would be a life-changer for those who are not able to open the doors on their own. In my time, I have attended many events at Hillel, ranging from lectures to social gatherings, and the friends I have made are priceless to me. Thankfully, there was often someone coming or going that could open and hold the doors. But I think that as a large community on campus, that opportunity should be made available to all students, whether or not they can get past the doors. If Hillel had automatic doors, it would help current Illini, as well as everyone in the future, and would only create a better place for everyone."
Since the University of Illinois is the most accessible school in the country, my friends and I are trying to bring Illini Hillel to the same standard. Please help us get there!
