Five years ago, I started traveling to Haiti as part of my school's partnership with St. Paul's School in Caracol, Haiti. Caracol is in the central plateau, which is a three-hour drive from Port-au-Prince, followed by a hundred and fifty minute walk through the "mountains beyond mountains" The students (and families) in Caracol and at St. Paul's are subsistence farmers, craftworkers, and day-laborers in the surrounding communities.
Over the years that I've traveled, low teacher salaries have made it difficult to maintain the staff; the lack of a lunch program has forestalled student attendance; the environment has worn away the school building to a dangerous degree; and the remoteness of the community from any urban center without a means of transportation has left the community and the school reeling.
In the last year, a lot of improvements have been made to help:- the school building is being repaired;
- a food program (to feed students once a day) is being instituted;
- and the teacher's salaries are being updated.
These ambitious programs and repairs have been made through generous donations from a few schools and individuals, and it occurred to me that I could contribute my own talents to help raise some of the funds necessary to fund building the road from Caracol to the national highway, some eight miles through the mountains away.And that's where YOU come in!
My goal is to take photos of #OneHundredFamilies in #OneHundredDays to raise the money for St. Paul's. I'm setting a goal of closing the campaign by May 15th in order to get the money to St. Paul's in June.
Know that 75% of what you donate ($75, $150, $225) will go directly to St. Paul's. The last %25 will help me get around to your family and/or provide the rewards at various levels! Thank you for your generosity. Thank you for sharing your contributions with your friends, family and networks.
Thank You! Gracías! Mesi!
