Once in a lifetime expedition to Borneo
Donation protected

Hello, my name is Corey. I am 14 years of age and am currently a year nine student. I will be doing multiple fundraising projects to allow me to go to Borneo for a once in a lifetime opportunity to help communities build schools and water treatment facilities for those less fortunate. The company I will be traveling with is called camps international ( you can find more information in the link below).
Borneo itself is a beautiful place with some of the highest biodiversity seen on earth, the food, culture and environment are all amazing sights to see, that unfortunately is just the surface of this country because it is in fact classed as a third world country that is suffering from many problems including multiple layers of governmental corruption and extreme poverty, close to over 20% of Borneo's population lives below the poverty line which may not sound particularly major however that is over 4,744,000 people who live in poverty and very often go without food or clean running water. Education is also a problem due to the lack of schools and lack of teachers, this inevitably affects the lives of many young children who do not have an education and instead rummage through garbage dumps to sell garbage to help support their families resulting in a majority of the population unable to read or write.
My trip to Borneo will be a four week long expedition where I'll undoubtedly play a vital role in community projects, working hands on with the Borneo communities to help provide much needed facilities to aid in improving the people of Borneo's daily lives. These include things such as digging the foundation for infrastructure such as medical facilities, school buildings, community centres, installing water pumps, plastering and decorating.
I will also get to experience Borneo's culture while staying in traditional south east Asian long huts.
Part of my expedition will also have a strong environmental and habitual conservational role to play where I will be helping plant trees and supporting waste management as this is a big problem for Borneo and the other islands around it and therefore many different environments are suffering as a result of this. Because of this I will also be working with a non profit organization on recycling plastic waste so it doesn't end up on beaches and in the ocean which without my intervention would have devastating effects on marine wildlife.
Whilst on my four week expedition I will also be able to visit the Sepilok orangutan rehabilitation centre where I will learn about and engage in orangutan conservation.
I will also have the opportunity to take on the challenge of learning to scuba dive on a padi open water scuba diving course which once passed i will receive a padi open water scuba diving licence which will remain with me for the duration of my life.
I believe that this once in a lifetime expedition will take me way out of my comfort zone allowing for significant personal development and professional development enabling me to get ahead in life whilst making a life changing positive impact to others and myself. I will develop life skills which are valuable building blocks of my future such as : leadership , teamwork, resilience, decision making, financial management and cultural sensitivity. All of which will become imperative to me being able to grow and develop as an adult , I will be able to use my expedition towards the ASDAN universities award which accredits my experience and is a welcome addition to my CV or UCAS application.
I have lots of ideas to help me to enable myself to complete my target of £5230 such as offering car washes , and hovering . gardening and weeding services. offering tea and coffee mornings at my school once a week as well as within the wider community. making biscuits, cakes ,flapjacks and brownies and selling them to friends family and businesses as well as many other great ideas, so please follow my Facebook page to keep up to date with any upcoming events.
