Olivia's Bali Mental Health Internship
Donation protected
I am thrilled to announce that I have been accepted into the SLV. GLOBAL Team for August 2019!!! With SLV, I will be undertaking a 4 week voluntary placement abroad in Bali, Indonesia. SLV.GLOBAL is a Mental Health Organization that aims to promote positive mental health through interactive and stimulating sessions with the help of volunteers from around the world. It offers projects and cultural awareness training, leadership opportunities, and encourages volunteers to contribute to the continued growth and development of the team and its projects.
It is difficult for students while studying to find a job / internship that really aligns with their studies and allows them to extend and utilize obtained knowledge from lectures and lab classes to the real world. Luckily, this program offers psychology students and graduates to take part in hands-on work experience abroad in the mental health sector.
I am currently a Junior in College (in US terms) and in my 2nd Year of University at Kingston University London (in UK terms). Due to the difference in teaching and assessment, I have been put back a year in the UK and am currently repeating material I have already learned, which is very frustrating. I feel as though this placement with SLV will not only allow me to advance in my educational career but it will give me so much knowledge that I have missed out on being a year behind in the UK. I am a hard worker and I am currently doing out of class research and studying on topics such as neuro-imaging, brain anatomy and other areas in neuropsychology, through text book readings, and online courses.
A bit about the program....
My placement into this program is focused around making a positive impact on the local community in Bali. I am not only making a positive impact on the others around me, but this opportunity will also allow me to positively influence my own personal life. I will be working full time (5 days a week) during a 4 week placement where I will be developing crucial skills to further my education and career. As well as working with individuals with special needs and mental health issues, I will also be teaching English in the community to children aged 3-12 and young adults aged 17-25. I will be running project activities, working in a team with other volunteers and bring my positivity and light to the under-resourced centers. I will be bringing my yoga practice to Bali as well, where I will be teaching classes to all! I will be immersed in a new culture, and language as I will be living with a local Bali family in a village in the regency of Gianyar.
I will be responsible for paying for this journey (which includes : my placement fee that covers 2 meals for 4 days each week *not including Friday meals or weekend meals, housing, professional training sessions, my round trip flight, jabs/ shots for the Bali region, travel insurance and a visa to enter and live in Bali.) and I would really appreciate your support.
placement fee : 1,400.00
placement holder (non-refundable) : 250.00
jabs : 600.00
flight : 650.00
Visa for Bali : 80.00
Weekend meals : 200.00
Now this is a lot of money... I know!, However I hope to raise enough money to be able to seize this wonderful opportunity I have been given. I am currently working a part time job to help raise money for my placement to be able to explore and see more of Bali on my weekends off.
It is a unique opportunity I have been offered to combine volunteering abroad with gaining hands-on work experience.. what more could this psychology loving Travel Bug ask for?
It would mean so much to me if you could lend your support to me for this journey, so I can continue to improve myself, my skills and the world, by bringing my positivity and light whenever I go. Through my journey I hope that I will aid in stripping down the stigma of mental health both in the western world and in the under-resourced Bali. If you can
I am really looking forward to working in a completely new culture in a challenging environment and SLV’s focus on ethical and sustainable projects is something that really made me want to take part in their mission. The fact that this is a work-experience placement and not a holiday is a really important aspect of why I chose to apply to volunteer with them.
Any contribution, even a small donation of 10 GBP would go a long way in supporting me and helping me reach my goal.
With your help, I will gain hands-on work experience volunteering abroad, while helping put an end to the stigma in the under-resourced mental health sector in Bali.
From the bottom of my heart, thank you so much for taking your time to read this and in advance, thank you so much for donating and helping me follow my dreams.
All the love in the world,
Olivia
