Built Circa 1782, the Old Stone Tavern is Pittsburgh's oldest standing commercial building and played an instrumental role in Pittsburgh's earliest days as a city. The structure is built of stone believed to have been quarried out of the hillside not far behind the Tavern. Pittsburgh's Friends of the Old Stone Tavern Trust, Inc. a 501(c)(3), along with the owners of the old stone tavern, the Porter Family, are raising funds to remove the improper red paint and coatings off of the front stone facade. These coatings have been causing irreversible damage to the natural "breathing" stone facade for almost 100 years. Natural stone should never be painted, and because ours was, it has been causing premature deterioration and structural erosion, if not dealt with soon, it could even lead to cracking of the stone blocks.
This project is small in scale for what is needed for the tavern, but is an important part in our journey to stabilize the building and will help ensure the Tavern lives on for future generations. The Old Stone Tavern restoration project as a whole will only be successful with the help of our community. We are also seeking grant opportunities and additional help from those who can contribute whether it be financial, skilled, technical etc. No amount of help is too small. Feel free to reach out to us directly if you would like to get involved, know of ways to help, or have any questions. For more information on the tavern itself, plans for revitalization, or to contact us, please visit https://OldStoneTavern.com. Thank you!
