Hi everyone,
Thank you for visiting this GoFundMe page! This is an economic relief fund specifically for Oakland High newcomer students who need financial relief during the Covid-19 pandemic. This page is managed by Ms.Rumeli (our students clinical social worker) and myself (the science teacher and program director).
Newcomer students are recently arrived immigrant students who have been in the United States for less than 3 years. Many of our newcomer students’ families work as day laborers, work in restaurants, construction or other servicing jobs all of which have drastically reduced employment opportunities during this time.
Our teachers and staff have done outreach to families, and many families are reporting that they are out of work and have no idea how to pay rent. During a health crisis that calls for all of us to “shelter in place”, the last thing on anyone’s mind should be “where am I going to find money to feed my family?”, “how am I going to make sure the rent, gas, and light bill is paid?”, “how am I going to buy food?” These are all common questions that are being asked by so many people, especially our immigrant community.
While many folks are applying for unemployment or awaiting news of an economic aid package from the government, the majority of our families won't qualify for any of this aid due to immigration status, length of time with their employer, and/or their last year's income. Our immigrant families are a vulnerable community as most members are undocumented, do not have health or employment benefits, do not qualify for “paid time off” or unemployment. 100% of donations will be given directly to our newcomer students and their families to ensure financial stability during this time. " ," ¿cómo voy a comprar las necesidades de mi familia? " Todas estas son preguntas comunes que hacen muchas personas, especialmente nuestra comunidad de inmigrantes.
