Dear reader,

My father (78) asked me to set up a GoFundme campaign, because his homeowner insurance (that finally paid out after more than a year) only covered a small portion of the cost for repairing the damage caused by a large fire in September 2022 that destroyed 80% of his house. He has used his savings and the small insurance payout to replace the main part of the roof, but there is still an estimated 25.000 euro needed to replace other parts of the roof, electric wiring (by a professional), new ceilings, windows, solar panels, clean up of rubble etc. I will put the backstory below here in more detail. My father has been quite down, as the fire also destroyed most of his possessions of emotional and monetary value.

He lost his hearing due to meningitis in 2008, and has more difficulty walking. I’m grateful he, his dog and his cat made it out alive, but it would be nice for him to have a safe and comfortable home again. My father was born in the Netherlands, but he has taken the Hungarian nationality in 2018 because he loves the country.

More detailed backstory:

My father bought the house (originally from ca. 1850) near Nagykőrös in 2005 and invested his savings to renovate it completely, planning to retire in Hungary. He had been staying in Hungary for larger periods of the year since then, but emigrated to Hungary indefinitely in 2018 when he also took the Hungarian nationality. The plot is some distance of the main road, with no connection to the powergrid. He therefore had solar panels installed on the roof, with a powerbank and a separate voltage inverter and had his own water supply that he filtered. The meterbox had a safety against short circuiting (done by a professional). My father thinks the fire was caused because one of the charging regulators of the solar panels continued charging instead of shutting off, causing the powerbanks to explode.

My father’s eccentric appearrance is a result of a hobby as well as a response to having been ostracized in his youth by the bad choices of his father. He was in television and in newspapers a few times in the 1990’s, as well as had some international fame as a piercer. He moved to Hungary for more peaceful living.

Beste lezer,

mijn vader (78) vroeg mij om een Gofundme campagne op te zetten, omdat de verzekering slechts een klein aandeel van de totale schade door een grote brand in September 2022 aan zijn autarke huis in Hongarije (na meer dan een jaar wachten) vergoed heeft.

Hij heeft met zijn spaargeld en het uitgekeerde bedrag het grootste deel van zijn dak kunnen herbouwen, maar er is nog geschat ca. 25000 euro nodig om de rest van het dak te repareren, elektrische bedrading, nieuwe plafonds, nieuwe ramen, nieuwe zonnepanelen etc aan te brengen.

Mijn vader is door meningitis in 2008 doof en slecht ter been geworden, wat een brand dan nog enger maakt. Mijn vader is nog erg verdrietig over het gebeuren en hoe zijn huis er nu aan toe is. Hij is een hoop spullen kwijtgeraakt waaraan hij gehecht was, al ben ik blij dat hij, zijn hond en zijn kat het overleefd hebben.

Het huis uit ca. 1850 werd voor 80% verwoest. Doordat het enigzins afgelegen ligt, was het niet aan het stroomnet aangesloten maar werd door zonnepanelen van stroom verzorgd. De meterkast was vakkundig gezekerd tegen kortsluiting, maar mijn vader denkt dat de brand ontstaan is doordat een van de zonnenpanelenregelaars (hoeveel watt binnen mag komen) kapot gegaan is, waardoor de akku ontploft is. Hij hoopt een hybride model powerbank en regelaar te kopen, waarbij een dergelijk ongeluk niet mogelijk is.

Mijn vader was sinds hij het huis kocht in 2005, vaak langere gedeeltes van het jaar in Hongarije, maar is in 2018 definitief geemigreerd en heeft de Hongaarse nationaliteit aangenomen. Zijn wat eccentrische uiterlijk is het gevolg van zowel een uit de hand gelopen hobby, als een reactie wegens uitstoting door de gemeenschap door slechte keuzes van zijn vader. Hij is in de jaren 90 meermaals op tv en in de krant geweest en genoot enige bekendheid als piercer. Hij zocht in Hongarije een rustige plek om te wonen.
