Odila has been at a refugee camp in Zambia since 2001. His native country, Congo, was embroiled in a brutal civil war from 1998-2003 which left 5 million people dead and 2 million people, including Odilla, displaced. In early 2017 he was informed that he would be resettled to the United States in coordination with the United Nations High Council for Refugees (UNHCR) and Catholic Charities. He will soon relocate to the Hanover/Gettysburg area.
Catholic Charities sets a goal for refugees to become self-sufficient and integrated into American society. But that will take some time. A local group, "Friends of Odila", is coordinating efforts within our community to give Odila a warm welcome and a soft landing in his new home.
During his first few weeks and months, Odila will need support especially for the costs of housing, utilities and other expenses until he is able to obtain employment and in the future additional education. The committee has set a goal of $4800 to cover his first few months of housing, utilities, food, clothing, transportation and other needs. Any financial assistance and any suggestions regarding employment or other issues that you are able to give will make this possible.
Personal Note from Sarah:
From what I have read, Odila seems to be an absolutely amazing person and will prove a true asset to our area! In his refugee camp he was the project leader for the construction of a malnutrition clinic. In his home country he worked for Human Rights, specifically the rights of the child. We are so blessed to welcome him to our community!
