Occupy DC is a grassroots organization focused on ending police brutality, holding politicians accountable, and ensuring the mental and physical health of civil rights activists.
We do this in several ways:
-By applying constant pressure to our local politicians and those who hold the power in DC. We have managed to reduce the police budget by a small fraction but we have to keep fighting until the police stop terrorizing our streets.
Another important aspect of our organization is social welfare and community outreach.
-We host free weekly yoga sessions directed at protesters but open to everyone, we firmly believe self-care is very important to ensuring the fight keeps going.
-We also host educational movie nights during which we show films and documentaries relevant to the continued fight for equality. After the film, we usually have an open discussion and it's a great learning experience.
-We organize community cleanups in forgotten neighborhoods so that the residents know that there are people that still care.
-We make and distribute care packages to houseless people and those in need across the city.
The organization was formed as a response to militarized police tactics being used against civilians and a need for proper planning and execution. Most of our members have suffered serious bodily and emotional harm in the hands of law enforcement over the past few weeks with no end in sight.
We have grown to become much bigger and important to the community than we intended and these funds will go towards us continuing to support the community with food, shelter, transport, medical supplies, legal support and other protest necessities.
